Post-doctoral position in Optical Trapping and Cell Biology
ICFO is offering a postdoctoral position to a well-qualified, highly motivated and dynamic young scientist who wishes to enhance his/her scientific career in a friendly and stimulating environment.
The successful candidate will be joining the Neurophotonics and Mechanical Systems Biology research group led by Prof. Dr. Michael Krieg to implement new methods for in-vivo force measurement using optical tweezers.
The Krieg lab at ICFO is interested in the mechanical control of physiological processes involving the sensation of mechanical stresses. We primarily work with model organisms such as zebrafish and C elegans, but also tissue culture, and guide our experiments with theoretical models and simulations. The aim of the advertised position is to advance the in vivo optical trapping technology using genetically encoded high refractive index particles. We use advanced imaging and biophysical measurements to infer how mechanical properties of molecules, cells and tissues governs biology.
The main task of the advertised position is to investigate the fundamental physical principle of how cells cope with mechanical stresses on the tissue level. We look for motivated individuals with a strong background in optical tweezers and bioengineering, ideally with prior experience in mammalian tissue culture, and/or experience with in-vitro biochemistry. The goal is to genetically encode bio-orthogonal particles for high-force measurement inside cells with the aim to investigate the mechanotransduction pathways that protect subcellular organelles from mechanical damage. The successful applicant has access to cutting edge microscopy with photopatterning/optogenetic module, microfluidics setups and state-of-the-art nanofabrication facility.
Opportunities for colaborations exist in house and externally and the successful applicant will work closely with senior postdocs and the PI.

Candidates must hold an internationally-recognized MSc or Ph.D.-equivalent degree (or evidence of its completion in the nearest future) preferably in biophysics, (bio)-engineering or biosystems design.
The successful candidate should have received formal training in optical tweezer technology, preferably with a strong theoretical background in cell mechanics and rheology. Experience with protein biochemistry and bioengineering is a plus, but successful applicants can be trained on site. Proof of ambition, productivity, and creativity is a required, and a track record of conference presentations and first author peer-reviewed publications will be expected for PhD level candidates. We wish the candidate to engage in discussions, collaborate with team members and enjoy thinking deeply while developing ideas independently.

In general, you will be requested to indicate name, institution, contact data, and relationship in the last part of the online application form. Depending on the opening, referees will be automatically contacted by ICFO requesting them to complete a standardized evaluation form and submit a letter of support for the candidates. Submission of academic transcripts and degrees?
The required documentation to be submitted for application is indicated in the ‘application process’ of each opening. In general, ICFO will ask that you provide a copy of your most recent academic degree certificate. Additionally, and particularly for fellowships and internship positions, ICFO will also need you to submit scanned copies of your academic transcripts (current and previous studies). The academic transcripts contain the list of courses, including the credits and marks obtained. Provisional degree certificates are generally accepted by ICFO.
The application form requires the indication of my GPA – what shall I indicate?
GPA stands for Grade Point Average. Apart from other criteria, selection for ICFO positions, above all for fellowships and internships, is measured in terms of the academic performance. In this regard, ICFO needs an indication of the average of your final overall grade obtained in your studies (stated in your transcripts), the minimum grade required to pass in your university and the maximum grade that can be achieved or the overall qualification obtained in your PhD-studies (for applicants with a PhD-degree).
