MSCA-ITN-EID “Nano-structured glass for future display and communication technologies” (NANO GLASS)

ICFO is offering 4 PhD-fellowships Marie Curie Early-Stage Researcher positions for in the EU Horizon 2020 MSCA-ITN-EID “Nano-structured glass for future display and communication technologies” (NANO GLASS) to well-qualified graduate students, who wish to obtain a doctoral degree in any of the research topics covered.

Our International PhD Fellowship Program welcomes applications from individuals with a degree in a field of science and engineering related to ICFO research activities in particular nanophotonics or quantum technologies.

The fellowships are offered in the scope of the ITN-EID project: “Nano-structured glass for future display and communication technologies” (NANO GLASS).

NANO-GLASS will train four PhD students (ESRs) in frontier glass materials science and nano-photonics through collaborative interdisciplinary research projects undertaken in state-of-the-art academic and industrial facilities. We will provide exceptional training, particularly in industry-relevant technical and transferable skills, enhancing the employability of the researchers in the information and communication high-tech sectors.

The ESRs will play a pivotal role in this challenging and industrially-relevant research programme. They will each register for a PhD, and will work on unique projects that bridge academic (fundamental) research and product (industrial) development. Their doctoral studies will be undertaken in both a highly competitive academic environment (ICFO) and in a high-tech industry (CORNING), both world-leading in their fields.

CORNING is the world-leading company in advanced glass technology and has developed key products that have changed our lives. ICFO is among the top Photonics Institute in the world, a leader in cutting edge research. ESRs will be incorporated in the ICFO PhD Programme, to accomplish their 36 months ITN fellowship, including 18 months on secondment at CORNING, thereby gaining in-depth experience in state-of-the-art academic and industrial research environments.

NANO-GLASS aims to develop disruptive nano-structuring designs and methods, that will provide unprecedented functionalities to display screens and optical fibres. The research programme will comprise four individual research projects (IRPs), each assigned to a different early stage researcher (ESR) and aligned with the following specific research and technological objectives:

IRP1: Anti-reflection and self-cleaning tactile display screens.
Objective:
To develop an omnidirectional reflection-free (<1% reflection up to 60º angle of incidence) surface without distortion of the intended image and with more than 90% suppression of fingerprint visibility based on the use of subwavelength dielectric nano-structures and polymeric self-assembly monolayers.
The successful candidates will work in the Optoelectronics research group led by Prof. Dr. Valerio Pruneri and collaborate with the Single Molecule Biophotonics research group led by Prof. Dr. Maria García-Parajo at ICFO, Dr. Prantik Mazumder and Dr. Wageesha Senaratne at CORNING.

IRP2: Tuneable transparent projection screens.
Objective:
To create a new design based on metal nano-caps optically coupled to atomically thick metals or graphene, which could lead to the first transparent screen for full red-green-blue colour projection displays, actively controllable through electrical gating.
The successful candidates will work in the Optoelectronics research group led by Prof. Dr. Valerio Pruneri and collaborate with the Organic Nanostructured Photovoltaics research group led by Prof. Dr. Jordi Martorell at ICFO and Dr. Todd St Clair and Dr. Michel Prassas at CORNING.

IRP3: Quantum photon generators and processors for secure communication.
Objective:
To develop a micro-nano-structured optical fibre with tailored linear dispersion and highly nonlinear properties that generates high visibility quantum signals (e.g. entangled photons) for information security/secure communication (>105 photon pairs per s with >95% fidelity).
The successful candidates will work in the Optoelectronics research group led by Prof. Dr. Valerio Pruneri and collaborate with the Quantum Photonics with Solids and Atoms research group led by Prof. Dr. Hugues de Riedmatten at ICFO, Dr. Aleksandra Boskovic and Dr. Daniel Nolan at CORNING.

IRP4: Waveguide quantum memories for secure storage.
Objective:
To create a nano-structured glass or fibre with enhanced photon storage time (>10 ms) for processing quantum signals, including entangled photons, in an optical network.
The successful candidates will work in the Quantum Photonics with Solids and Atoms research group led by Prof. Dr. Hugues de Riedmatten and collaborate with the Optoelectronics research group led by Prof. Dr. Valerio Pruneri at ICFO, Dr. Daniel Nolan and Dr. Aleksandra Boskovic at CORNING.

ICFO only accepts applications submitted online via the ICFOjobs interface. As an exception, and only in case of force-majeure problems with electronic submission, candidates may submit their application in hard copy within the deadline.

Is it possible to apply for more than one opening? May I apply even if I have been considered for an ICFO opening in the past (i.e., re-application)?

Yes.

Do I receive a confirmation acknowledging reception of my application?

Yes.

Is it possible to update my personal data or application material? Likewise, will I be able to delete my application (and therefore all personal data)?

In the first step of application, through the online application form, you will have to provide your personal data including your contact e-mail. Once submitted, you will receive an acknowledging e-mail, containing an application number and a link which you have to follow in order to continue with the procedure (submission of application material, etc.). Via the link you receive by e-mail, you will also be able to update your data and application material (within the established deadlines) or even to withdraw your application.

In case of questions - whom shall I contact for help in submitting my application?

Please contact the recruiting staff of ICFO’s Human Resources at jobs@icfo.eu. Should you have already submitted an application online, please do not forget to indicate your application number(s), as well as the name of the opening.

Particularly for PhD- and Postdoctoral openings: Is it possible to apply even if I have not yet finished the minimum academic qualification required?

Yes, unless the call explicitly indicates otherwise. In general, candidates should hold an internationally-recognized degree or evidence of its completion before the prospective starting date.

Applications need to be supported by reference letters. How should these be submitted?

For exact details on how to proceed with reference letters, please check the specific opening you are applying for. In general, you will be requested to indicate name, institution, contact data, and relationship in the last part of the online application form. Depending on the opening, either the ICFO recruiting staff will contact your referees for their assessment, or you will be instructed to ask your referees to submit their reference letters electronically via the online application form or e-mail (jobs@icfo.eu). Candidates should by no means submit a reference letter in support of their own candidature on behalf of their referees.

Submission of academic transcripts and degrees?

The required documentation to be submitted for application is indicated in the ‘application process’ of each opening. In general, ICFO will ask that you provide a copy of your most recent academic degree certificate. Additionally, and particularly for fellowships and internship positions, ICFO will also need you to submit scanned copies of your academic transcripts (current and previous studies). The academic transcripts contain the list of courses, including the credits and marks obtained. Provisional degree certificates are generally accepted by ICFO.

The application form requires the indication of my GPA – what shall I indicate?

GPA stands for Grade Point Average. Apart from other criteria, selection for ICFO positions, above all for fellowships and internships, is measured in terms of the academic performance. In this regard, ICFO needs an indication of the average of your final overall grade obtained in your studies, or the overall qualification obtained in your PhD-studies (for applicants with a PhD-degree).
